The parts store looks cheapest until you count getting there. A car that will not start does not drive to a counter, so you are adding a jump, a tow, or a ride, and then you are doing the work yourself in a parking lot, assuming the battery is somewhere you can reach and the car does not need the new one registered.

A shop handles all of that, but the car still has to get there, and a dead battery means arranging a tow before anything else happens. That tow is frequently more than the difference between the quotes.

How long a car battery lasts, and what New York does to that

Three to five years is the honest range for most cars, and city driving pushes it toward the shorter end.

Short trips are the main culprit. Starting the engine takes a large slug of charge, and a ten-minute drive to the store does not put it all back. Do that repeatedly and the battery lives in a permanently undercharged state, which is what actually wears it out. A car that sits on the street for a week at a time has the same problem from the other direction.

Temperature does the rest. Summer heat accelerates the chemistry that degrades a battery, and then winter presents the bill, because a battery that lost capacity in July is the one that will not turn the engine over in January. That is why so many batteries die on the first genuinely cold morning, having seemed fine the day before.

Warranty, and what it is actually worth

Battery warranties are quoted in a way designed to sound better than they are, so it is worth knowing the shape of them.

Most are split: a free replacement period followed by a longer pro-rated period. The free replacement window is the part that matters. During it, a failed battery is swapped at no cost. After it, the pro-rated portion credits you a fraction of the original price against a new one, and that fraction shrinks every month, so a battery that dies deep into a pro-rated term is worth very little back.

The other thing to check is what voids it. Fitting a standard flooded battery where the car specifies AGM will generally void the warranty, as will failing to register the battery on a car that requires it, because both shorten its life in ways the manufacturer will not underwrite. That is one more reason the registration step is not optional busywork.

Signs you will be buying a battery within six months

Cars usually give some warning before they leave you standing.

Slow cranking is the clearest one: the engine turns over noticeably more lazily than it used to, particularly first thing on a cold morning. Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev are another. So is a car that starts fine when driven daily but struggles after sitting for a few days, which points at a battery that no longer holds charge well.

Age is worth counting on its own. If your battery is past four years and the car is doing short city trips, it is on borrowed time regardless of how it feels today. Testing it costs a few minutes and tells you whether to plan for it or forget about it, which is a better position than finding out in a parking garage at night.
