Pads only, or pads and rotors?
This is the question that decides most of the bill, and it has a real answer rather than a sales answer.
Pads are a wear item and get replaced when the friction material runs low, typically somewhere around three millimetres left. Rotors are a different matter. They have a minimum thickness stamped on them by the manufacturer, and they can be reused as long as they measure above it, run true, and have no cracking or deep scoring.
So we measure. Pad thickness at each corner, rotor thickness with a micrometer, runout, and the condition of the surface. If your rotors measure fine, pads-only is a real option and we will tell you that instead of selling you a set you do not need. If they are under spec, scored through, or heat-cracked, replacing pads alone is a waste of the pads, because a chewed-up rotor destroys new friction material quickly.
How long brake pads last in city driving
The mileage numbers you read online assume a mix of highway and town driving. New York is not that.
Stop-and-go traffic means far more brake applications per mile than the average, and every one of those turns pad material into heat. A car doing short trips around Queens and Brooklyn can wear a set of front pads in the mid twenty-thousands where the same car on a highway commute might see double that. Add the weight of stop-start traffic on hills, and front pads on a heavier vehicle go quicker still.
Front brakes do most of the work, usually seventy percent or more of the stopping, which is why fronts wear out first and why doing one axle at a time is normal and correct rather than a shortcut.
What we replace and what we leave alone
A brake job is pads, rotors when they are out of spec, and the hardware that makes them work properly: the clips, shims, and slide pins that let a caliper float freely. Sticking slide pins are one of the most common causes of uneven pad wear, and cleaning and greasing them is part of the job rather than an upsell.
Calipers get replaced when they are seized, leaking, or dragging, and not otherwise. A brake fluid flush is worth doing when the fluid is old or has absorbed moisture, since wet fluid boils at a lower temperature and gives you a soft pedal exactly when you least want one. We check it and tell you what it reads.
Brakes are the one system you never want to gamble on, and the flip side of that is we do not treat it as an excuse to replace everything on the axle by default.
Rust, road salt, and seized hardware
This is the part of a brake job that New York adds and the online repair estimates leave out.
Road salt goes after everything behind the wheel. Caliper slide pins seize in their bores, which stops the caliper floating and leaves one pad doing all the work until it wears out at twice the rate of its partner. Rotors corrode onto the hub hard enough that they need persuading off rather than lifting off. Bleeder screws round or snap. The retaining clips and shims that stop pads rattling turn to flakes.
None of that is dramatic, but it is the difference between a job that takes an hour and one that takes three, and it is why an estimate built for a car in a dry climate does not survive contact with a car that has spent ten winters parked on a Queens street. We clean and grease the slide pins and hardware as part of the job rather than reassembling worn parts onto new pads, because a seized caliper is what destroys a fresh set in a few thousand miles.

Front, rear, and doing one axle at a time
Pads should always be replaced in axle sets, both sides of the front or both sides of the rear together, because uneven friction across an axle makes the car pull under braking. Replacing a single corner is not a saving, it is a handling problem.
Doing only the front axle when only the front is worn, however, is perfectly normal. Rears on many cars last two or three times as long as fronts. If your rears measure healthy we will leave them, note the thickness so you know roughly when to expect them, and you can plan for it.
Cars with an electronic parking brake need the rear calipers put into service mode with a scan tool before the pistons will retract. We carry the tools for that, which is worth knowing if you were quoted rear pads somewhere that told you it needed a dealer.
Common questions
Can you do brakes in a parking garage or on the street?
Usually yes. We need a reasonably level surface and enough room to work safely beside the car with it jacked up. A tight garage bay with low clearance or a spot wedged between two bumpers on a busy avenue may mean moving the car a short distance first.
Do you machine or resurface rotors?
No. On most modern cars rotors are made thin enough that there is little material to remove, and by the time a rotor is scored badly enough to want machining it is usually close to minimum thickness anyway. We measure them and either reuse them as they are or replace them.
How long does a brake job take?
A front or rear pad-and-rotor job is typically an hour or two. Seized hardware, a rusted-on rotor, or an electronic parking brake that needs retracting can add time, and we will say so when we quote.
What if a caliper turns out to be seized?
We tell you before doing the work, with the revised price. A seized caliper is worth catching, since it is what burns through a fresh set of pads on one side in a few thousand miles.
