What a sinking pedal actually means

Brakes are a sealed hydraulic circuit. Your foot pushes a piston in the master cylinder, that pressure travels through steel lines and rubber hoses to each caliper, and the caliper squeezes the pad against the rotor. Because brake fluid does not compress, the pedal should meet firm resistance and stay there for as long as you hold it.

If the pedal keeps travelling, one of two things is true. Either fluid is escaping the circuit, or something inside the circuit that should be sealing is not. That is the whole diagnosis in one sentence, and everything below is about telling those two apart.

Worn pads, by contrast, do not do this. A pad worn down to the backing plate will grind, squeal, extend your stopping distance and eventually damage the rotor, but the pedal height barely changes. People assume a low pedal means new pads and it usually does not.

The single most useful test: hold the pedal

Sit in the parked car with the engine running. Press the brake pedal with steady, moderate pressure, the amount you would use for a normal stop, and simply hold it there for thirty seconds.

If the pedal slowly sinks toward the floor under constant pressure, you have found something important. That is the classic signature of a master cylinder failing internally. The seals inside have worn enough that fluid slips past them instead of being pushed down the lines. There will be no puddle on the ground, because the fluid never leaves the system. This is the version of the fault that fools people into waiting, because everything looks fine under the hood.

If the pedal stays put during the hold but goes low the moment you pump it and then firms up, you are more likely looking at air in the lines or fluid escaping somewhere. Pumping temporarily takes up the slack, which is exactly why pumping is a warning sign rather than a fix.

Now check the fluid. Pop the hood and look at the brake fluid reservoir, which is usually a translucent plastic tank near the back of the engine bay on the driver side. There are minimum and maximum marks on the side. Fluid below minimum means it went somewhere, and brake fluid does not get used up. It leaks.

Where the pressure usually goes

A rubber flex hose is the short flexible section between the hard line on the body and the caliper on the moving suspension. They age from the inside out. A swollen hose balloons under pressure instead of transmitting it, which gives a soft pedal that never quite firms up, and a collapsed one can trap pressure and leave a brake dragging.

Steel brake lines rust, and in a city that salts its roads all winter they rust from the outside in. The failure is usually sudden. A line that has been thinning for three years lets go on the one hard stop that finally asks too much of it.

Caliper piston seals leak past the dust boot. You will often find the inside face of one wheel damp and the pads on that corner soaked, which also ruins the pads.

Wheel cylinders, on cars that still run rear drums, leak inside the drum where nothing is visible from outside. The giveaway is a slow fluid loss with no puddle anywhere.

And the master cylinder, as above, loses pressure without losing a drop.

Why this is not the repair to postpone

Most car faults give you a grace period. A failing alternator gets you a few more days. A worn pad grinds for a while before it does real damage. Brake hydraulics do not work that way, because the failure mode is not gradual weakening. It is a line that holds until it does not.

Modern cars split the brake circuit diagonally, so one failure normally leaves you with two wheels of braking rather than none. That is a genuinely good safety design and it is also why people keep driving on a sinking pedal for weeks. Half a brake system feels alarming rather than fatal, so it gets tolerated.

The part worth sitting with is that you now have no reserve. The next failure, on a system that has already proven it is failing, takes the other half.

We start with the fluid level and its condition. Brake fluid absorbs water out of the air over time, and old fluid boils at a lower temperature, which produces a soft pedal on a long descent that firms back up once things cool. That one is a fluid flush rather than a parts job, and it is worth ruling in or out early because it is the cheapest answer on the list.

Then we pressurise the system and look for where it goes. Every flex hose, every hard line along the underbody, both front calipers, the rear calipers or wheel cylinders, and the master cylinder itself including the area behind it where a leaking rear seal seeps into the brake booster and hides completely from view.

Common questions

Can I drive a short distance if the pedal still stops the car?

We would rather you did not. A pedal that sinks is a system that has already lost part of its capacity, and the failures that follow are usually sudden rather than gradual. If it is a choice between a short slow drive and being stranded, keep it under 20 mph, leave enormous following distance, use the parking brake to help you slow, and go straight there. Better still, let us come to you.

The pedal goes low but there is no leak anywhere. What is that?

That is the classic master cylinder failure. The seals inside are letting fluid slip past internally, so pressure is lost without a drop escaping the system. It is the reason a visual check under the car can come up clean while the brakes are genuinely failing. The hold test in the section above is what separates it from the leaking versions.

Would bleeding the brakes fix it?

It fixes it only when the cause is air in the lines. If the real fault is a leaking master cylinder, a rusted line or a swollen hose, bleeding gives you a firm pedal for a few days and then the same symptom returns. That return is a useful clue in itself, so tell us if the car has already been bled.

Does a low brake pedal mean I need new pads?

Usually not. Worn pads keep pedal height roughly the same while adding noise and stopping distance. Pedal travel is a hydraulic symptom. The two problems do turn up together on a neglected car, but the sinking pedal is the one that sets the urgency.
