How long brake pads last
Brake pads last somewhere between 25,000 and 70,000 miles. That range is wide because it is set by how the car is driven far more than by the pads themselves, and stop-and-go city driving sits at the short end of it.

Pad thickness and what it means

Most pads start life around 10 to 12 mm and the legal and practical floor is about 3 mm. Numbers vary a little by make, and the inner pad often wears faster than the outer one, which is why a pad has to be seen from both sides.
Why the range is so wide
A brake pad is a consumable, like a tire. It converts your car's momentum into heat and gives up a little of itself every time it does. So the number of times you brake, and how hard, is the whole story.
A car doing highway miles might see a few dozen real stops in a week. The same car in Queens traffic does that before lunch. Roughly speaking, city driving takes the same set of pads out in half the mileage, sometimes less.
Weight matters too, because a heavier car carries more energy to shed. A loaded pickup or a three-row SUV eats pads faster than a compact, and the current generation of electric vehicles is an interesting exception in the other direction. Regenerative braking does so much of the slowing that EV pads routinely outlast the car's second set of tires, which brings its own problem: pads that sit unused for years seize and corrode rather than wear out.
Then there is driving style, which is the biggest single variable and the one people underrate. Coasting toward a red light instead of holding speed and braking late is worth thousands of miles across the life of a set.
Front pads wear about twice as fast as rear
When a car brakes, weight transfers forward onto the front wheels. Manufacturers design for that, so the front brakes do somewhere around seventy percent of the work on a typical car.
The practical result is that you will usually replace front pads twice for every once at the rear. If a shop tells you all four corners need doing on the same visit, that is not automatically wrong, but it is worth asking to see the measurements.
There is one modern wrinkle. Cars with an electric parking brake apply it through the rear caliper motors, and on a lot of those the rear pads wear faster than they used to. If you have a newer car, do not assume the old two-to-one rule still holds.
The sounds, in the order you hear them
Most pads carry a small metal tab called a wear indicator, set to touch the rotor at about 3 mm of remaining friction material. It makes a high squeal that you hear when the brakes are not applied, and it stops when you press the pedal. That is deliberate and it is the car asking politely.
Grinding is the next stage and it is a different sound entirely, a low metallic scrape you feel through the pedal. That is the pad backing plate against the rotor face. At that point you are no longer buying pads, you are buying pads and rotors, and the job roughly doubles.
Worth separating out: a single squeak on the first stop of a damp morning is rust flashing off the rotor surface and it is nothing. New pads also chirp for a few hundred miles while they bed in. The sound that matters is the one that repeats every day and gets worse.
How to check them yourself in five minutes
On most cars you can see enough through the wheel spokes. Look through at the rotor, find the caliper, and look at the pad pressed against the disc face. You are looking at the friction material, the softer layer between the metal backing plate and the rotor.
A rough gauge: the material should be visibly thicker than the steel backing plate behind it. When those two look about the same, you are near 3 mm and it is time. A coin works if you want a number. The ridge on a US quarter is close to 2 mm, so if the pad looks thinner than that ridge, it is done.
Two cautions. The inner pad, on the far side of the rotor, often wears faster than the outer one you can see, and a sticking caliper slide can wear a single pad down to nothing while its partner looks fine. So a look through the spokes is a good screen and not a verdict. If the outer pad looks marginal, get the wheel off.
While you are there, run a finger across the rotor face. Light grooving is normal. Deep ridges you can catch a fingernail in mean the rotor is being cut.
What actually shortens pad life in a city
Stop-and-go traffic is the obvious one. Less obvious is that short trips prevent brakes from ever fully drying out, and a rotor that sits wet under a street-parked car develops surface rust that acts like sandpaper on the first few stops of every day.
Riding the brake down a long descent glazes the pad surface, which reduces bite and encourages people to press harder, which wears the pad faster still.
Hardware matters more than most people expect. Caliper slide pins need clean grease to let the caliper float. When they seize, one pad drags permanently, wears out in a fraction of the normal time, and cooks the rotor next to it. Good brake work replaces the slide hardware and the clips rather than just swapping the friction material, and skipping that is a large part of why some brake jobs last half as long as they should.
Towing, roof loads and a heavily loaded car all raise the energy the brakes have to absorb. So does a set of pads chosen on price alone, though the gap between a decent mid-range pad and a premium one is smaller than the marketing suggests.

How many miles do brake pads last?
Between 25,000 and 70,000 miles for most cars. Heavy city driving pulls that toward the low end, steady highway miles push it toward the high end, and front pads generally wear about twice as fast as rear ones. Mileage is a rough guide. Measured thickness is the real answer.
How long do brake pads last in years rather than miles?
Three to five years is typical for a car driven normally. On a car that barely moves, time becomes the limiting factor instead of wear, because rust builds on the rotors and the caliper slides seize. A low-mileage car that has sat through several winters on the street often needs brake work for reasons that have nothing to do with pad thickness.
Do ceramic pads last longer than semi-metallic?
Usually yes, modestly, and they run cleaner and quieter with less brake dust. Semi-metallic pads bite harder when hot, which is why they suit towing and spirited driving. For ordinary city use ceramic is the easier daily choice, and the difference in service life is smaller than the difference between two driving styles.
Do I need new rotors every time I do pads?
No. If the rotors measure above their discard spec and run true, new pads on existing rotors is a perfectly good job. Rotors get replaced when they are below spec, deeply grooved, cracked, or carrying enough thickness variation to shake the car. Is squeaking always a sign the pads are worn?
No. A brief squeal on the first stop after rain is surface rust and it means nothing. New pads chirp while bedding in. The signal to act on is a persistent high squeal that appears while you are driving without touching the brakes and quiets when you press the pedal, which is the wear indicator doing its job at around 3 mm.
