Worn shocks and struts: how to tell

Shocks and struts do not hold the car up, springs do that. Their job is to stop the springs oscillating, which is what keeps the tires pressed to the road. When they wear out the car does not sag, it floats, and your stopping distance quietly gets longer while your tires wear out in patches.

Cupped tire wear is the symptom people miss and the one that costs the most, because by the time it shows you are usually buying tires as well as struts.

What they actually do, and why it matters more than comfort

A spring absorbs a bump by compressing, then releases that energy by extending again. Left to itself it would keep doing that, bouncing the wheel up and down for several cycles after a single bump. The damper, which is what a shock absorber really is, converts that motion into heat and stops it after one.

The consequence is grip. A tire only steers and brakes while it is touching the road, and a wheel bouncing on an uncontrolled spring spends part of every cycle unloaded. That is why worn dampers stretch stopping distances measurably, and why the effect is worst on exactly the broken surfaces where you most need to stop.

So the standard framing of shocks as a ride comfort item is backwards. Comfort is the symptom you notice. Braking and steering are what actually changed.

A strut is a damper that also forms part of the structure holding the wheel in place, which is why replacing struts changes the alignment geometry and replacing shocks generally does not. That distinction decides whether an alignment is needed afterward, and we tell you which side of the line your car falls on before starting.

The tests you can do in a parking lot

The bounce test is the classic and it still works. Push down hard on one corner of the car, as much of your weight as you can get on it, then let go. A healthy damper brings the car back up and settles it in one movement. A worn one lets it rise, drop and rise again. Two or more bounces on a corner means that damper has stopped controlling anything.

It is a blunt instrument on modern cars with stiff springs, where you may struggle to move the car at all. Take a negative result as inconclusive rather than a pass.

The visual check is better. Look down the body of the strut behind the wheel. A damper is a sealed cylinder of oil, and a wet, oily, dust-caked film running down it means the seal has failed and the oil has gone. There is no repairing that and no argument about it: an oily strut is a finished strut.

Then look at your tires. Run a hand across the tread. Cupping, a scalloped pattern of high and low patches around the circumference, is caused by a wheel bouncing rather than tracking, and it is close to proof of worn dampers. It also makes a droning noise that people usually blame on tires or wheel bearings.

Clunks and knocks, and why they are usually not the damper

The single most common suspension complaint is a clunk over bumps, and it is worth being precise, because the clunk is often not the damper at all.

Sway-bar links are the usual culprit. They are small rods with ball joints at each end connecting the anti-roll bar to the suspension, they take a beating, and worn ones produce a distinct light knock over uneven surfaces and when turning at low speed. They are among the cheapest suspension parts on the car.

Strut top mounts are next. The mount is a bearing and a rubber block at the top of the strut, and a worn one clunks over bumps and often creaks or groans as you turn the wheel while stationary.

Worn control arm bushings give a deeper, heavier clunk, usually under braking or acceleration rather than over bumps, because they let the arm move fore and aft.

Ball joints and tie rod ends are the ones that matter most for safety, because a failed ball joint can separate the wheel from the car. Those get checked by hand for play as part of any suspension inspection, and they are the reason we put hands on every joint rather than replacing a damper because it was the part you asked about.

Why NYC is hard on suspension specifically

This is not a marketing line, it is a real difference in wear rates. Potholes, expansion joints, steel plates over roadworks, sunken manhole covers and constant low-speed impacts load suspension components in a way that highway miles simply do not.

A car doing 15,000 highway miles a year may have original struts at 90,000. The same car doing 8,000 miles in Queens and Brooklyn can need them at 60,000, because damage is a function of impacts rather than distance.

Salt is the other half of it. Winter road treatment corrodes the parts you cannot see: the slide pins, the bolts, the coil springs themselves. Broken coil springs are notably more common here than in dry climates, and a spring that has snapped near its lower coil often keeps working well enough that people drive on it for months without realising, until it cuts a tire.

The practical upshot is that mileage-based intervals underestimate what city cars need. If yours rides badly and the odometer says it should be fine, trust the ride.

Replacing in pairs, alignment, and what it costs

Dampers get replaced in pairs across an axle, and this is not an upsell. A new damper on one side and a worn one on the other means the two sides of the car respond differently to the same bump, which is unsettling at speed and worst under braking, exactly when you want the car predictable.

Fronts and rears do not have to be done together. Fronts almost always wear first, because they carry more weight and take the braking load, and doing the fronts alone is a perfectly reasonable job.

Alignment is the part worth being straight about. Replacing struts disturbs the geometry that controls how the tires meet the road, so an alignment afterward is genuinely needed. Skipping it wears out the new parts and a set of tires along with them. Shocks on the rear of most cars do not disturb geometry and do not require one.

Common questions

How long do shocks and struts last?

Manufacturers usually quote 50,000 to 100,000 miles, and city cars land at the bottom of that range or below it. Wear is caused by impacts rather than distance, so a car that lives on Queens and Brooklyn streets can need them well before a highway car with twice the mileage. If the ride has gone floaty and the odometer says it should be fine, believe the ride.

Is it safe to drive with worn struts?

For a while, with two real costs. Your stopping distance is longer because the tires spend part of each bump unloaded, and your tires are wearing unevenly, which usually means buying a set sooner than you should have. It becomes urgent if a strut is visibly leaking oil, if a spring has broken, or if there is a clunk that turns out to be a ball joint, since that can separate.

Do shocks and struts have to be replaced in pairs?
