Why your car pulls to one side
The first question is whether it pulls all the time or only when you brake, because those are two unrelated investigations. A constant pull is tires, alignment or a worn steering component. A pull that appears only under braking is a caliper or a hose, and that one is a safety problem rather than an annoyance.
Inspected and quoted by the job. Several causes of a pull are free to check and cost nothing to correct.

Do the test on a flat, empty road rather than a crowned one. Almost every road is built to shed water toward the gutter, and a mild drift to the right on a normal road is the camber doing its job, not a fault.
Rule out the road before you rule out the car
Road crown is the most common cause of a pull that is not a fault. Roads are built with a slight slope from the centre line to the edge so water runs off, and a car driving on that slope will drift gently downhill toward the kerb. In right-hand traffic that means a mild pull to the right on almost every road you use.
The test is to find somewhere flat and empty, a parking lot or a level stretch, and see whether the pull persists. If it disappears on flat ground, the car is fine and the road was the answer.
While you are at it, check tire pressures cold, all four, against the sticker in the driver's door frame rather than the number on the tire sidewall. That sidewall figure is the tire's maximum, not your car's specification, and people set to it constantly. A few psi difference between the two front tires produces a distinct pull, and it is free to correct.
These two checks account for a real share of pull complaints. Doing them before booking anything costs nothing and occasionally ends the investigation.
The tire swap test
Tires themselves cause pulls more often than people expect. A tire can have internal belt movement, called a conicity fault, that makes it want to roll toward one side. Nothing is visible from outside. The tire looks perfect and pulls anyway.
The test is simple and free: swap the two front tires side for side and drive it again. If the pull reverses direction, going from a left pull to a right pull, you have proved it is a tire rather than the car. If the pull stays exactly the same, tires are eliminated and you are looking at alignment or a worn component.
That single test saves a lot of unnecessary alignment work, and it is one of the first things we do rather than one of the last.
Uneven wear across the tread is worth a look at the same time. If one front tire is worn heavily on its inside edge and the other is not, the alignment has been out for a while, and the tire is now part of the problem as well as evidence of it. Feathering, where the tread blocks are sharp on one side and rounded on the other, points at toe misalignment specifically.
Pulling only when you brake
This is the version that matters most and the one people most often live with. If the car tracks straight normally and lurches to one side the moment you press the pedal, the two front brakes are not applying evenly, and under hard braking that becomes a genuine handling problem.
A sticking caliper is the usual cause. The piston or the slide pins corrode, the caliper stops applying and releasing cleanly, and one wheel gets more braking than the other. Salt and winter make this common here.
A collapsed brake hose does the same thing from the other direction. The inner lining of the hose breaks down and acts as a one-way valve, letting pressure through to the caliper and not letting it back out. That wheel stays partly braked all the time, which produces a pull, a hot wheel and a smell.
Both are checkable. A wheel that is noticeably hotter than its opposite number after a drive, or a wheel you can smell after a normal journey, has a brake that is dragging.
There is a related symptom worth naming: if the pull under braking comes with a pulsing pedal or a shake through the wheel, that is warped or uneven rotors rather than a caliper, and it is a different repair.
Alignment, and what a pothole actually does
Alignment describes the angles at which the wheels sit relative to the car and the road. Toe is whether they point in or out, camber is how far they lean, caster affects how the steering self-centres. All three can be knocked out of specification by a single hard impact.
New York provides those impacts generously. A pothole hit at speed can move an alignment out of spec instantly, and the tell is usually that the pull started on a specific day rather than creeping in over months. If you can name the day, say so, because it changes the inspection: a hard enough impact bends components as well as moving angles, and a bent control arm or a bent steering arm cannot be corrected by an alignment machine.
The reason to act rather than steer around it is tire cost. A car out of alignment scrubs rubber off the tread every mile, and a set of tires ruined in a few thousand miles costs multiples of the correction.
Alignment itself needs a machine and a level rack, so it is one of the few jobs we do not do in a driveway. What we do is establish whether alignment is actually the problem, and check for the bent or worn components that would make an alignment a waste of money until they are replaced.
Worn steering and suspension parts
When tires and alignment are ruled out, the remaining causes are components with play in them.
Tie rod ends connect the steering rack to the wheels. Worn ones allow the wheel to move independently of your input, which produces wandering rather than a steady pull, along with vague steering and uneven tire wear. They are also a safety item, since a failed tie rod end means losing steering on that wheel.
Ball joints allow the suspension to move while the wheel steers. Worn ones produce clunking, wandering, and in bad cases a pull, and a ball joint that separates drops the car onto its wheel arch.
Worn control arm bushings let the whole arm shift under load, which changes the alignment dynamically. The car may align perfectly on a rack and still pull on the road, because the geometry moves as soon as there is force on it. This is why an alignment that does not fix a pull is often a bushing problem.
A dragging brake and a sticking wheel bearing can both contribute too. All of these get found the same way: by hand, on the car, checking each joint for movement rather than guessing from the symptom.

That order matters. A pull sent straight to an alignment shop gets an alignment, and if the actual cause was a conicity fault in a tire or a sticking caliper, you have paid for a correction that fixes nothing.

Common questions
Why does my car pull to the right on the highway but not in a parking lot?
That is almost certainly road crown rather than a fault. Roads are built with a slope from centre to edge so water drains off, and your car follows that slope downhill toward the kerb. Test it on a flat, level surface with no camber. If the pull disappears there, nothing is wrong with the car.
Can an alignment fix a car that pulls?
Often, but not always, and it is worth checking the cheaper causes first. Unequal tire pressures, a tire with an internal belt fault, a sticking brake caliper and worn suspension bushings all produce a pull that an alignment will not correct. Swapping the front tires side for side is free, and if the pull swaps direction with them the tire was the cause.
Is it dangerous to drive a car that pulls when braking?
It is the version to take seriously. Uneven braking becomes a real handling problem in an emergency stop, exactly when you can least afford it, and the usual causes, a sticking caliper or a collapsed hose, both get worse rather than better. A wheel that is much hotter than the other side after a normal drive, or one you can smell, needs looking at now rather than next month.
The pull started right after I hit a pothole. What does that mean?
A hard impact can knock the alignment out of specification instantly, and if it was hard enough it can bend a control arm, a steering arm or the wheel itself. The distinction matters, because a bent component cannot be corrected by an alignment machine and needs replacing first. A pull with a firm start date gets inspected for damage as well as measured.
Do you do wheel alignments at my home?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. An alignment needs a level rack and measuring equipment that does not travel. What we do at the car is establish whether alignment is actually the cause, and check for the worn or bent parts that would make an alignment pointless until they are replaced. That way you only pay for the alignment once, after the car is ready for it.
