Why people search for a Chevy mechanic and end up at a dealer
Because that is what the top of the search results is: the GM dealer locator, then Yelp, then a few shops. The dealers on Northern Boulevard and out on Long Island do fine work on these vehicles at dealer prices, with an appointment, a drop-off and a shuttle. For a recall or a warranty claim that is where you go, and it costs nothing.
For an oil change, brakes, a battery, a tune-up or a warning light on a truck that is out of warranty, there is no reason the vehicle should leave the driveway. GM vehicles are well supported with quality parts, the work is conventional, and a mechanic with the right scan tool can do the routine and the common repairs where the vehicle is parked.
The known items, by model
The full-size trucks and SUVs, Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, go through brakes at a rate that matches their weight, and their batteries and alternators are working hard by 100,000 miles. A truck that cranks slowly on a cold morning in Bayside is usually a battery, and sometimes an alternator that has been undercharging it for months; we test both before replacing either.
The small turbo engines in the Cruze, Sonic, Trax and Encore have a short list of things that go: plastic coolant fittings and thermostat housings that seep, PCV systems that fail and cause oil leaks or a rough idle, and coils and plugs that need doing more often than the owner's manual suggests in city driving. All of it is cheap when caught early and expensive when a coolant leak becomes an overheat.
The Equinox and Terrain with the 2.4 engine use oil, and the fix for a lot of owners is checking and topping it between changes, which we do on every visit. The Malibu and the Buick sedans hide the battery in the trunk or under the rear seat, which is why the jump-start from a neighbor did not work and why we bring the right battery and know where it goes.

Common questions
Can you read GM-specific codes and reset the oil life monitor?
Yes. Our scan tool reads every module on GM vehicles, not just the engine, and we reset the oil life monitor and service messages after the work. A parts-store scanner reads the engine only, which is why it sometimes says no codes on a truck with a warning light.
My Silverado cranks slowly in the cold. Battery or alternator?
We test both at the truck before deciding. A slow crank is usually the battery, but an alternator that has been undercharging will kill a new battery in months, and a load test plus a charging test takes ten minutes and settles it.
Where is the battery on my Malibu or LaCrosse?
In the trunk or under the rear seat on many of these, with a remote jump terminal under the hood that a lot of people miss. We bring the correct battery and know the location, so a replacement is straightforward rather than a search.
Do you do the Cruze coolant leak?
The usual sources, the thermostat housing, the water outlet and the hoses and fittings, yes, at the curb. If the leak turns out to be somewhere that needs the engine apart, we tell you at the diagnosis rather than start it.
Will this affect a GM warranty or an extended warranty?
Routine maintenance done to the schedule with correct parts and recorded mileage does not affect the factory warranty. For an extended warranty, check the terms on who may do repairs; many allow any licensed mechanic and require the records we keep.
