Check engine light: how urgent is it really
There is one question worth answering before anything else: is the light steady or flashing. A steady light means the car has stored a fault and wants looking at within the week. A flashing light means a misfire is happening right now and is damaging the catalytic converter, so stop driving. Everything else follows from that.

If a red temperature or oil pressure warning is lit alongside the amber engine light, the engine light is the least of it. Those two mean stop the engine, not finish the journey.
What the light is actually measuring
The check engine light is not a general health indicator. It is the output of the onboard diagnostics system, which exists mainly to catch faults that raise emissions. That is why it covers such a strange spread of problems, from a fuel cap that is not sealing to a misfire that will destroy an expensive part.
Every car built for the US market since 1996 runs this system. It watches sensors, compares what they report against what it expects, and stores a code when something falls outside range. Some faults set a light immediately. Others have to occur on two consecutive drive cycles before the car will bother you, which is why a fault can exist for days before you see anything.
Understanding that changes how you read the light. It is not saying your engine is failing. It is saying one of a few hundred monitored values is not where it should be, and the range of consequences behind that runs from twenty dollars to four figures.
Which is exactly why the light on its own tells you almost nothing, and why the question that matters is what code is behind it and what the live data looks like.
Steady versus flashing, and why it matters so much
A steady light is the car filing a report. Something is out of range, it has been recorded, and the car would like it looked at. In most cases you can drive normally for a few days while you sort out an appointment.
A flashing light is a different message entirely. It is reserved almost exclusively for a misfire severe enough that unburned fuel is going out through the exhaust. The catalytic converter sits in that exhaust and runs at several hundred degrees. Raw fuel arriving in it burns where it should not, and the ceramic honeycomb inside can melt and block.
A misfire caught at the flashing stage is usually a coil, a plug, or an injector. A misfire driven on for two weeks is a coil, a plug, an injector and a catalytic converter, and the converter is often the largest single number on the invoice.
We have been called to cars where the owner kept driving because it still moved. It always still moves. That is the trap. The damage is happening in a component you cannot see or hear, and by the time you can, it is done.
Why the free parts-store scan is not a diagnosis
A free scan at a parts counter reads the generic engine codes and hands you a number and a description. That is genuinely useful, and it costs nothing, so it is a reasonable first move.
What it is not is a diagnosis, and the gap between the two is where most wasted money goes. A P0420 reads as catalyst efficiency below threshold, and a great many people buy a catalytic converter on the strength of that sentence. The code does not say the converter is bad. It says the downstream oxygen sensor is not seeing the difference it expects, which a lazy sensor, a small exhaust leak or an upstream misfire will all produce.
An oxygen sensor code frequently means a wiring fault or an exhaust leak rather than a sensor. A lean code names a symptom that has half a dozen causes. A misfire code names a cylinder, not a reason.
The counter scanner also reads only the engine module. Codes stored in the transmission, ABS, airbag and body modules are invisible to it, and a fair number of driveability complaints live in those.
The light is on but the car drives perfectly
This is the most common version of the call we get, and the honest answer is that it is worth a scan and rarely worth panic.
A large share of these are evaporative emissions faults. The system that stops fuel vapour escaping from the tank is sealed and self-tested, and the most common failure is a fuel cap that is not sealing properly. Take it off, check the rubber, put it back on until it clicks, and give the car a few drive cycles. If the light clears itself, that was it.
Beyond the cap it gets more involved: a purge valve, a vent solenoid, a cracked hose. None of them affect how the car drives, all of them keep the light on, and in states with emissions testing all of them fail the test.
The reason to scan anyway is that a car driving normally is exactly how an early misfire presents. You will not feel a single cylinder dropping out occasionally on a smooth road. The computer will. A fault that costs $95 to identify and a set of plugs to fix does not stay that size if it is left alone, and a converter is the price of finding out the slow way.
Never clear the light and hope
Clearing a code deletes the evidence. It does not fix the fault, and it takes with it the freeze frame data, the snapshot of every sensor reading at the exact moment the fault set. That snapshot is often the most valuable thing in the car for diagnosis, particularly on a fault that comes and goes.
It also resets the readiness monitors. Those are the self-tests the car has to complete before it can pass an emissions inspection, and they take a specific pattern of driving over several days to reset. Clear codes the morning of an inspection and the car will be rejected as not ready, whatever its actual condition.
The other habit worth breaking is buying the part named in the code. The code names the circuit or the reading that failed, not the component that caused it. Wiring, connectors, grounds and vacuum leaks set sensor codes constantly.
Test first, then buy. That order is the whole difference between a repair and a shopping list.

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

Will a loose gas cap really turn the light on?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes of a light on a car that drives perfectly. The evaporative system pressure tests itself and a cap that is not sealing fails that test. Remove it, check the rubber seal for cracks, and refit it until it clicks. If the light clears over the next few drive cycles, that was the whole story.
