Car starts then dies a few seconds later
A car that starts and then dies is telling you something more specific than a car that will not start at all. It has fuel, spark and compression, because it ran. Something removes one of them a few seconds later, and that timing is the clue.

This narrows the search. A scan tool reading live data while the engine actually dies is what confirms which one it is.
Why the engine dies a few seconds in, specifically
When you start a cold engine, the computer runs an open loop program. It ignores most of its sensors and squirts in a rich, generous fuel mixture from a lookup table, because a cold engine needs it and because the oxygen sensors are not warm enough to be trusted yet.
A few seconds later it switches to closed loop. Now it starts believing its sensors, and it trims fuel based on what they tell it.
That switchover is why so many of these faults happen at exactly the same moment each time. While the computer was guessing from a table, the engine ran. The instant it started listening to a sensor that is lying to it, the mixture went wrong and the engine quit.
So the useful question is not why won't it start. It ran. The question is what changed at second three, and there is a fairly short list of answers.
The anti-theft version, which fools everybody
This one is worth knowing because the symptom is so distinctive and the fix is often not mechanical at all.
Almost every car built since the late nineties has an immobiliser. A chip in the key talks to a receiver ring around the ignition barrel. If the car does not recognise the key, most systems let the engine start and then cut the fuel injectors two to three seconds later.
That is deliberate. The manufacturers chose to let it start briefly rather than simply refuse, and the result is a symptom that sends people hunting for fuel pumps.
The signature is precision. It runs for two or three seconds, every single time, identically, and then stops cleanly rather than stumbling. Look at the dash for a small key or padlock symbol, which may flash while cranking or come on solid after the stall.
Common causes: a spare key whose chip has failed, a key fob that has been dropped one time too many, a receiver ring that has gone bad around the ignition, or an aftermarket alarm or remote start that has decided to intervene. Trying the other key is a thirty second test that solves this surprisingly often.
Dies unless you hold the gas pedal
If the engine keeps running while you feed it throttle and stalls the moment you let off, the problem is at idle specifically. The engine can run, it just cannot run itself at low speed.
Two main causes. Either the engine is not being allowed enough air at idle, or it is getting air the computer does not know about.
On older cars an idle air control valve manages idle speed by metering air around the closed throttle plate. They gum up with carbon and stick. On newer drive-by-wire cars, the throttle body itself does the job electronically, and a coating of carbon on the throttle plate produces the same result. Cleaning the throttle body genuinely fixes a lot of these, though on many cars it needs a relearn procedure afterwards, and without that the idle can be worse before it is better.
The other side is a vacuum leak, which is unmetered air sneaking in past the mass airflow sensor. A cracked intake hose, a perished PCV hose, a failed intake manifold gasket. At higher rpm the extra air is a small percentage of a large flow and the computer copes. At idle it is a large percentage of a small flow, the mixture goes lean, and the engine dies. That is why a vacuum leak so often shows up as a stall at idle and nothing else.
The crankshaft position sensor pattern
The crank sensor tells the computer where the engine is in its rotation, which is what makes timed spark and timed fuel injection possible. Without a signal, the computer stops firing anything.
These fail in a specific and recognisable way: they work cold and quit hot. The sensor sits near a hot engine, and as it heats up an internal fault opens. So the car starts fine in the morning, runs, and then stalls once things warm up. Then it will not restart until it has sat for twenty or thirty minutes, at which point it starts perfectly and the whole cycle repeats.
That heat-related pattern is close to a signature. If your car dies after a short run and then starts again once it has cooled, this belongs at the top of the list.
It usually sets a code, and on a scan tool you can watch engine rpm reported live and see it drop to zero at the moment it stalls even though the engine is still physically turning. That is the confirmation.
Fuel, and why starting fluid is a useful test
If the engine runs only as long as there is starting fluid in the intake and then dies, it is not receiving fuel. That is a clean, decisive result and it narrows things quickly.
A fuel pump that is failing rather than dead will often build enough pressure to fire the engine and then fall away under running demand. Same for a badly clogged fuel filter on the cars that still have a serviceable one. A failed fuel pump relay can drop out once the initial prime cycle ends. And a dirty fuel pressure regulator can bleed pressure off faster than the pump can make it.
There is a second version worth mentioning, because it catches people. Fuel that has sat in a tank for a year or more, which happens to cars that were parked for a season, goes stale and can gum injectors. A car that ran fine when it was parked and now starts and dies has often just gone off in the tank.

Common questions
Why does my car start and then die immediately?
Because it has fuel, spark and compression at the moment of starting and loses one of them seconds later. The usual suspects are the immobiliser cutting fuel, a vacuum leak or dirty throttle body that leaves it unable to idle, a crankshaft position sensor failing as it heats, or fuel pressure falling away. The number of seconds it survives is a genuine clue.
It only stays running if I keep my foot on the gas. What is that?
The engine can run but cannot idle on its own, which points at air rather than fuel. Either it is being starved of air at idle by a carbonned throttle body or a stuck idle air control valve, or it is getting unmetered air through a vacuum leak that ruins the mixture at low rpm. Both are common and both are usually straightforward.
Could this be the anti-theft system?
Very possibly, and it is the most misdiagnosed version of this fault. Most immobilisers let the engine fire and then cut the injectors two to three seconds later. If it dies at the same moment every time, cleanly, and there is a key or padlock light on the dash, try your spare key before you buy any parts.
The car starts fine cold and dies once it warms up. Why?
