Car stalls while driving
An engine that quits while you are moving is a safety problem first and a diagnostic problem second. You lose power steering assist immediately and most of your brake assist within a pump or two, so knowing what to do in the first ten seconds matters more than knowing the cause.
Scan and diagnosis, including reading the freeze frame data the car stored when it stalled.
When it stalls, and what that points to

Whether the dash lights die with the engine is the single most useful observation you can make, and it splits the list roughly in half.
What to do in the first ten seconds
The engine stopping does not mean the car stops steering or braking. It means both get much heavier, and knowing that in advance is most of the battle.
Keep hold of the wheel and expect it to go stiff. On hydraulic power steering the pump stops turning. On electric assist the motor usually keeps working while there is battery voltage. Either way you can still steer, it just takes real effort.
The brakes still work, but the vacuum booster has a reserve of about one or two firm presses. After that the pedal goes hard and you need to push much harder than usual. So brake once, decisively, rather than pumping the pedal away.
Do not turn the ignition all the way off, because on many cars that engages the steering lock. Put the transmission in Neutral, aim for the shoulder or the nearest safe space, and use your momentum to get there.
Hazard lights on once you are stopped. Then try restarting. Whether it restarts immediately, restarts after a wait, or refuses entirely is genuinely useful diagnostic information, so make a note of which one it was.
The observation that halves the problem
Next time it happens, if there is a next time, watch the dashboard at the exact moment the engine dies.
If the dash lights stay on and the engine simply stops, the car still has power. You are looking at a fuel, spark or sensor problem. The computer is alive and it either stopped commanding the engine or lost the information it needed.
If the dash goes dark at the same instant, the whole car lost power. Now you are looking at a battery connection, a main ground, an ignition switch, or a failing charging system that finally ran the battery down to nothing.
Those two branches lead to completely different investigations, and this one detail is often the difference between finding it on the first visit and chasing it for a week. Nobody thinks to look, because a stall is alarming and the dashboard is not where your attention goes. If it happens again, look.
Why intermittent stalls are genuinely hard
Being honest about this is worth more than pretending otherwise. A car that stalls once a fortnight and starts right back up is one of the harder faults in the trade, and any shop that promises a same-day answer on one is guessing.
The reason is that most diagnosis relies on observing a fault while it is happening. A car sitting in front of you running perfectly is not giving up anything. And many of these faults leave no code, because the computer noticed the engine stopped but never saw a sensor go out of range long enough to record a fault.
What does help, a lot, is data. Modern cars store a freeze frame with every code, a snapshot of every sensor reading at the moment the fault registered. Even when the code seems unrelated, that snapshot often shows fuel trims drifting or a sensor reading something impossible.
For the genuinely elusive ones we can leave a logger connected so the car records itself while you drive it normally, and then read back what the sensors were doing in the seconds before it cut out. That turns an intermittent fault into a recorded one, which is the only reliable way to catch something that will not perform on demand.
The usual causes, grouped by when it stalls
Stalling at idle or when coming to a stop is the most common version, and it is usually air. A carbonned throttle body, a stuck idle air control valve on an older car, or a vacuum leak letting in air the computer cannot account for. At idle a small leak is a large proportion of total airflow, which is why these faults appear at low rpm and vanish on the highway.
Stalling under load or acceleration points at fuel or ignition. A fuel pump losing pressure when demand rises, a clogged filter, a failing ignition coil, or a dirty mass airflow sensor under-reporting air so the computer under-fuels exactly when it should not.
Stalling once hot with a restart after cooling is the crankshaft position sensor pattern, and it is specific enough to be worth naming on its own.
Stalling over bumps or while turning is wiring. A chafed harness, a corroded connector, a cracked solder joint, or a loose ground strap that opens with movement. These are the ones that need the car to be moving to reproduce.
And a stall where everything goes dark is electrical: a loose battery terminal, a corroded main ground, a worn ignition switch, or an alternator that stopped charging some miles back and finally emptied the battery.
One thing worth checking before you call
Open the hood and look at the battery terminals and the main ground strap where it bolts to the body or the engine block.
A terminal that can be twisted by hand, or a post with white or blue-green crust on it, can produce a complete power loss over a bump. It is not the most likely cause of a stall, but it is the cheapest to rule out, and we have been called out to more than one intermittent stall that turned out to be a clamp somebody never fully tightened after a battery change.
Also worth noting, because it costs nothing: whether anything changed recently. A battery replacement, a fuel fill, a jump start, work done by someone else, a warning light that came and went. Faults that appear a week after unrelated work are usually connected to it, and the timeline is information we cannot get from the car.
What the diagnosis involves, and what it costs
We come to the car with factory-level bi-directional scan tools and read every module rather than just the engine, along with stored codes, pending codes, and the freeze frame data from the moment the fault triggered.
Then we test rather than infer. Fuel pressure on a gauge under load, charging system output, voltage drop across the main power and ground paths, live sensor data on a road test where the fault allows, and a physical inspection of the intake for leaks and the harness for chafe points.
If it is intermittent and refuses to appear, we say so plainly and talk to you about logging rather than replacing parts hopefully. Guessing on an intermittent fault is how people end up three parts deep with the same symptom.

Common questions
Is it safe to drive a car that stalls occasionally?
Not really. The car itself is not dangerous sitting still, but an engine that cuts out on a bridge, in a tunnel or while merging removes your steering assist and most of your brake assist at the worst possible moment. If it has stalled at speed even once, treat it as a job for this week rather than something to keep an eye on.
Why does my car stall and then start again straight away?
That points at something intermittent rather than something broken outright. Common causes are a crankshaft position sensor with a heat-related fault, a fuel pump losing pressure under demand, a loose electrical connection that opens over a bump, or a vacuum leak that only upsets things at idle. The clue is what the car was doing at the time.
Can a bad alternator make a car stall while driving?
Yes. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs on stored battery energy, and when that runs out the ignition and fuel injection lose the voltage they need and the engine stops. The tell is that the battery warning light was usually on for a while first, and that the whole dash goes dark when it dies rather than just the engine stopping.
There are no warning lights and no codes. Can you still find it?
Often, yes, though it takes longer and we will be straight with you about that. Freeze frame data from unrelated codes, live fuel trims, and pressure and voltage testing find a good share of them. For the ones that will not show up on demand we can leave a logger on the car so it records the seconds before the next stall, which beats replacing parts on a hunch.
What should I do the moment it stalls?
Hold the wheel firmly and expect it to go heavy. Shift to Neutral, do not switch the ignition fully off because that can lock the steering, and steer to the shoulder using your momentum. Brake once and firmly rather than pumping, since the booster only has a press or two left. Hazards on once you have stopped, then try restarting and note what happens.
