What a tune-up costs in NYC, and why the same word means three different bills
A tune-up costs whatever the shop decides a tune-up is, which is why the guides that rank for this question give ranges that barely overlap. On a modern car it means spark plugs, coils or wires if they test weak, air and cabin filters, and a check of the ignition system and idle. Our labor for that starts at $130 at your driveway. What moves the total is the engine: how many plugs, what kind, and whether reaching them means taking the intake off.
Starting labor for a tune-up on an engine with the plugs on top. Plugs, coils if they test weak, and filters are quoted for your engine before booking; engines that need the intake removed are quoted above the start.
What is in a tune-up price
| Item | What sets the cost | Range in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | Plug access: on top of a four-cylinder, or behind the intake on a V6, or a V8 with eight | From $130; quoted above that for hidden plugs |
| Spark plugs | Copper, platinum, or iridium, and how many | A few dollars each to twenty-plus each for iridium, times four to eight |
| Coils or wires | Only if a coil tests weak or a wire is breaking down | Per coil, quoted if needed; not replaced by default |
| Engine air filter | Filter for your engine | Modest; some housings are a job in themselves |
| Cabin filter | Filter and access, some are behind the glovebox | Modest |
| Anything else | Fuel-system cleaner, throttle body service, injector service | Sold at chains; we do the throttle body if it is dirty and skip the rest unless there is a reason |
The number you get before booking is labor plus the parts your specific engine takes. It does not change at the curb.
Why the ranges online are useless
Search the cost of a tune-up and the results are a chain quoting for plugs and filters, a parts store quoting for plugs alone, a finance company quoting an average that includes a fuel-system flush, and a Reddit thread where someone paid $90 and someone else paid $700. They are all right, for what they priced.
The old tune-up, points and condenser and a carburetor adjustment, does not exist on any car built in the last thirty years. What exists is a set of wear items with different lives: plugs at 60,000 to 100,000 miles on most modern engines, filters more often, coils when they fail. A tune-up is doing the ones that are due. Pricing it means pricing your engine, not a category.
The engine is the price
A four-cylinder with the plugs on top under a plastic cover is the starting price: four plugs, an hour or so, $130 labor. A transverse V6 in a minivan or a crossover has a rear bank of three plugs against the firewall, and on many of them the upper intake manifold comes off to reach them, which doubles the labor and adds an intake gasket. A V8 has eight plugs and eight coils, and on a few engines the plugs are known to seize or break in the head, which is a different job again. A direct-injection turbo four needs its plugs sooner, at 30,000 to 40,000 miles on some, and they are iridium and pricier.
That is why we ask the year, make, model and engine before quoting, and why two people with a tune-up on the same day can pay quite different amounts. Both paid the right price for their engine.
What we do not add
Coils are replaced when they test weak or have failed, not as a set because the plugs are out. On most engines a coil that is fine at 90,000 miles is fine at 120,000. Fuel-system cleaning, induction service and injector flushes are chain add-ons that rarely fix anything on a car that runs fine on decent fuel, and they are not part of our tune-up unless there is a specific reason, which we would explain. A dirty throttle body gets cleaned because it costs a few minutes and helps the idle. The point of the price is that it is the work the car needs.
Is it worth it
On a car that has the symptoms, a rough idle, hesitation, more cranking in the morning, worse mileage, and is past its plug interval, a tune-up is about the most improvement per dollar you can buy for a car. On a car with no symptoms that is still under its interval, it is not due, and we will say so if you ask us. On a car with a misfire and a flashing light, it is not a tune-up, it is a diagnosis first, because the cause might be one coil or might be something the plugs will not fix.
Tune-ups across Queens and NYC
Done in the driveway or the garage in about an hour for the simple engines, longer for the ones with hidden plugs, across Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and Long Island. Text the car and the engine, or the VIN, and you get labor and parts back as one number.
Common questions
How much is a tune-up on a four-cylinder?
Labor from $130 plus four plugs and the filters, quoted for your engine. Iridium plugs cost more than copper, and a direct-injection turbo may want them sooner. The total is fixed before we book.
Why is the quote for my V6 minivan so much higher?
The rear three plugs sit against the firewall and on many V6 engines the upper intake has to come off to reach them, which is more labor and an intake gasket. It is the single biggest reason tune-up prices differ between cars.
Should the coils be replaced with the plugs?
Only the ones that test weak or have failed. Replacing a full set of good coils is money spent on parts the engine did not need. We test them while the plugs are out and quote any that are due.
Does a tune-up fix a check-engine light?
If the light is a misfire from worn plugs, yes. If it is a misfire from a failed coil, an injector, or a vacuum leak, plugs alone will not fix it. A flashing light means diagnose first; a steady light means scan it, then decide. Our diagnostic is $95 and it stops you paying for a tune-up that was never the answer.
How often does a car need a tune-up?
By the plug interval in the manual: 60,000 to 100,000 miles on most modern engines, sooner on some direct-injection turbos. Filters more often. If you cannot remember the last one and the odometer is past 80,000, it is probably due.
