Why your car shakes at idle

A car that shakes at a red light and smooths out once you are moving is telling you something specific. Either one cylinder is not pulling its weight, or the engine is running fine and the mounts holding it have gone soft. Those two feel similar from the driver's seat and cost very different money, so the first job is telling them apart.

The Neutral test is the fastest one you can do yourself. Sit at a stop, shift to Neutral, and see whether the shake drops away. If it does, suspect mounts. If it stays exactly the same, suspect a misfire.

Why idle is where problems show up first

At 40 mph the engine is turning fast enough that one weak cylinder gets carried by the other three or five. The flywheel has momentum, the road has noise, and everything blurs together. Nothing feels wrong.

At idle the engine is turning around 700 rpm and every firing event is a separate event you can feel through the seat. There is no momentum to hide behind. A cylinder that fires weakly, or misses entirely every few revolutions, becomes a shudder you notice at every red light.

That is why a shake at idle that vanishes above 20 mph is usually good news rather than bad. The fault is real, but it is being caught early, at the point where it is a set of spark plugs rather than a catalytic converter.

The same logic runs the other way. A vibration that is there at idle and at 60 mph is not an engine problem at all. Engines get smoother with rpm, wheels get worse with speed. If the shake tracks your speedometer rather than your tachometer, look at tires, wheel balance and driveshafts instead.

The Neutral test, and what it rules out

Engine mounts are rubber blocks that bolt the engine to the body and absorb the shake it makes. They perish. Once the rubber cracks or the fluid-filled type splits, the shake stops being absorbed and arrives in the cabin instead.

Here is the test. Sit at a stop with the engine idling in Drive, note how much the car is shaking, then shift into Neutral and note it again.

In Drive, the torque converter is loading the engine and pushing it against the mounts. In Neutral that load disappears. So if the shake noticeably calms down in Neutral and comes back the moment you select Drive, the engine is probably running fine and the mounts are the problem. That is a mechanical repair, not an ignition one.

If the shake is identical in Drive, Neutral and Park, the engine itself is running rough and the mounts are doing their job. Now you are looking at spark, fuel or air.

Misfires, and the flashing light that changes everything

A misfire means a cylinder is not burning its fuel properly, usually because the spark is weak, the injector is dirty, or the cylinder is losing compression. Worn plugs and tired ignition coils cause the large majority of them, and both are ordinary wear items rather than disasters.

There is one version of this that is not ordinary. If the check engine light is flashing rather than sitting steady, the computer is telling you that a misfire is severe enough to be pumping raw fuel into the exhaust. That fuel burns in the catalytic converter, which is not built for it, and a converter is a four-figure part on most cars.

A steady light with a rough idle can wait a few days. A flashing light means get off the road, stop driving it, and get it scanned before you move it again. The difference between those two is often the difference between a tune-up and a bill ten times the size.

Compression loss is the less common third cause, and it is the one worth naming honestly, because no amount of plugs and coils fixes it. A cylinder leaking past a valve or a ring needs different work, and a compression or leak-down test is how we find out before you spend anything.

Vacuum leaks, dirty throttles and idle control

The engine computer meters fuel against the air it thinks is coming in. A cracked vacuum hose, a leaking intake gasket or a split PCV pipe lets in air it never counted, so the mixture goes lean and the idle goes unsteady.

Vacuum leaks show up at idle specifically, for the same arithmetic reason as everything else on this page. At idle the engine is only drawing a small amount of air, so an unmetered leak is a large percentage of the total. At highway rpm that same leak is a rounding error. A car that idles badly and drives perfectly is a classic vacuum leak pattern.

Carbon on the throttle body is the other quiet one, especially on direct injection engines and on cars that live in city traffic. The throttle plate has to close down to a precise gap at idle, and a ring of carbon around that gap changes the airflow enough to make the idle uneven. Cleaning it is straightforward and it is one of the more satisfying jobs to do, because the improvement is immediate.

Older cars have a separate idle air control valve that can stick. Newer ones handle idle through the electronic throttle body itself, which is why the fix has shifted from replacing a valve to cleaning a plate.

We come to the car and start with the scan, because a misfire code names the cylinder and that alone removes most of the guessing. We read stored codes, pending codes and live fuel trims, then look at the freeze frame the car saved when the fault set.

From there it is testing rather than assuming. Coil output, plug condition once they are out, injector operation, and a smoke test of the intake when the numbers suggest a leak. If the mounts are the suspect, we load the engine against them and watch how far it moves.

Common questions

Is it safe to drive a car that shakes at idle?

Usually yes for short trips, with one hard exception. If the check engine light is flashing, stop driving it. A flashing light means a misfire is severe enough to be destroying the catalytic converter, and every mile you add to that is money. A steady light or no light at all, with a shake that clears once you are moving, will generally get you through the week while you book it in.

Why does my car only shake when it is in Drive at a stop?

That pattern points at the engine mounts rather than the engine. In Drive the torque converter loads the engine against its mounts, and worn mounts pass that vibration into the body instead of absorbing it. Shift to Neutral at a stop and see whether it calms down. If it does, the engine is likely running fine and the rubber holding it has perished.

Will a tune-up fix a rough idle?

Most of the time, because worn plugs, a weak coil and a clogged air filter cause the majority of rough idles and a tune-up covers all three. It will not fix a vacuum leak, a perished mount or a cylinder with low compression, which is why we scan and test first rather than selling the tune-up and hoping. If ignition is not the cause, we say so before you spend anything on it.

Can bad gas cause a shaky idle?

It can, and it is worth mentioning if the shake started within a tank or two of filling up somewhere unusual. Water or contamination in fuel upsets combustion in exactly this way. It is not common enough to assume, but it is free to tell us, and a fault that appeared the day after a fill-up is a different investigation from one that crept in over six months.
