Spark plug replacement cost, by engine, done at your curb in NYC

Spark plugs are cheap. Reaching them sometimes is not. A four-cylinder with the plugs under a plastic cover is an hour and four plugs; a transverse V6 with three plugs against the firewall can mean the intake comes off; a V8 is eight of everything. Our labor starts at $130 for the easy layout and is quoted above that for the hard ones, with the plugs themselves priced by type and count for your engine. Here is what sets the number and when the job is due.

Starts at $130

Starting labor for plug replacement on an engine with the plugs on top. Plugs are quoted by type and count for your engine; engines with hidden plugs are quoted above the start.

What spark plug replacement costs, by engine layout

EnginePlugsAccessLabor
Inline four, plugs on top4Remove a cover and the coilsFrom $130
Direct-injection turbo four4, iridium, due soonerUsually on top; some need care with the coilsFrom $130, plugs cost more
Transverse V6, front-drive6Rear bank against the firewall; intake often offQuoted above the start
Longitudinal V6 or inline six6Usually accessibleQuoted for the engine
V88 (16 on some engines with two per cylinder)Varies; some known for seized or breaking plugsQuoted for the engine
Boxer four (Subaru)4Tight against the frame rails on both sidesQuoted above the start

Plug type is set by the engine, not by preference. Iridium plugs cost more per plug and last much longer; fitting copper plugs to an engine designed for iridium halves the interval.

Why the guides disagree on the price

The search results for this question are a parts store pricing plugs alone, a chain pricing plugs plus a fee, a national average that mixes a Corolla with a Range Rover, and a Reddit thread where someone is amazed anyone pays $250 for plugs. None of them is wrong, they are pricing different engines and different amounts of work.

The plug is the small part of the bill on most cars. Four copper plugs are a few dollars each; four iridium plugs are around twenty each. The labor is the difference, and the labor is about where the plugs are. A shop that quotes a flat price for every car is either overcharging the Civic or undercharging the Odyssey.

When plugs are due

By the interval in the manual: most modern engines with iridium or platinum plugs go 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Direct-injection turbo engines, which are most new four-cylinders, run their plugs harder and many call for replacement at 30,000 to 40,000 miles; owners who do not know that end up with a misfire and a flashing light at 45,000. Older engines with copper plugs are 30,000 miles.

By symptom: a rough idle at lights, hesitation when you accelerate, longer cranking on cold mornings, worse fuel economy, and on a car past its interval, a misfire code. Plugs wear gradually enough that you adjust to the engine getting worse. New plugs are the reminder of what it felt like.

What we do, and what we check while we are in there

Covers and coils off, each plug out with the right socket, the gap on each new plug checked against spec and not assumed from the box, a little anti-seize where the engine calls for it and none where it does not, and every plug torqued to the value the manufacturer lists, because an overtightened plug in an aluminum head is an expensive mistake. The coils are tested as they come off, and the boots and connectors are looked at for oil, which on some engines means a valve cover gasket is due and worth knowing about. Then the engine runs and we road-test it.

If a plug is seized, or on the engines known for it, breaks, that is handled with the right extractor rather than force, and we tell you before it happens on an engine with that reputation.

The engines that cost more, and why

Front-wheel-drive V6 minivans and crossovers: the rear bank sits against the firewall, and on many the upper intake manifold comes off to reach it, with a gasket to replace. Subaru boxers: the plugs point out the sides of the engine into the frame rails and the access is tight, so what should be an easy four-plug job takes real time. Some V8 trucks: sixteen plugs on engines with two per cylinder, or a known problem with plugs seizing in the head. Direct-injection turbos: the plugs are easy but they are iridium, cost more, and are due twice as often. All of these are quoted for the engine, before the visit, and the quote is the number.

Plugs at the driveway across Queens, Long Island and NYC

A lot of the people who find this page are on Long Island with a Chevy or a Ford that is due, and we cover Nassau along with all of Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. Text the year, make, model and engine, or the VIN, and you get the plugs and labor as one price.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace spark plugs on a four-cylinder?

Labor from $130 plus four plugs, which for iridium is roughly twenty dollars each and for copper a few dollars each. Total quoted for your engine before we book.

Why is the quote for my V6 so much higher than my friend's four-cylinder?

The rear three plugs. On most transverse V6 engines they sit against the firewall and the upper intake has to come off to reach them, which roughly doubles the labor and adds a gasket. Same plugs, different job.

Should I replace the coils at the same time?

Only the ones that test weak. Coils last a long time and replacing a good set because the plugs are out is money spent on parts the engine did not need. We test them as they come off and quote any that are due.

Can I use cheaper copper plugs instead of iridium?

If the engine was designed for iridium, no. Copper plugs in that engine wear out in a fraction of the interval, and on a direct-injection turbo they can cause misfires quickly. Use the type the manufacturer specifies; the extra cost is spread over 60,000 miles or more.

My check-engine light is flashing. Is it the plugs?

It is a misfire, and plugs are one cause, along with a coil, an injector or a vacuum leak. Stop driving with the light flashing, since unburned fuel damages the catalytic converter. We diagnose which cylinder and why for $95, and if it is plugs, the replacement follows.
